Air Conditioning Means ‘Control My Climate,’ Not ‘Make Me Comfortable’
Air conditioning units do more than just keep you cool in the summer. These systems manipulate everything related to the air in your home. Sure they keep you cool over the summer, but the air is also heated, humidified, dehumidified, and purified. Maybe you think of air conditioning as a luxury of a newer or remodeled home, but an HVAC unit is just as critical to those living in
Many people would not be able to survive the winters in northern states without heating units. Many people would not be able to survive the summers in southern states without air conditioning. Climate control is more about keeping people healthy than it is about keeping people comfortable. We tend to take advantage of the technological advances we have made in climate control and forget that these units allow survival in less than ideal climate conditions. Many people would freeze to death in the winter or burn their homes down trying to stay warm during the winter without a heating system.
In the summer heat, dehydration can lead to heat stroke or death, especially in children and in elderly adults. These demographics are less able to recognize the changing conditions of their bodies and correct the problems, and therefore they are more susceptible to harm.
Air conditioning also provides quality air as well. Not just so people with allergies can keep cats as pets, but quality air allows hospitals to remain sterile environments. Would you want to be admitted to a hospital that was without air conditioning? Where germs and bacteria had the perfect conditions to run rampant? Of course you wouldn’t. Air conditioning a hospital means purified and dehumidified air, not just pleasant patients.
Climate control involves air conditioning, but not only for cooling. Being able to control a climate allows people to survive in difficult climates. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to migrate with the change of seasons?
