Job Stability Wanted
I’ve been keeping track of the news lately and yesterday they reported an unexpected jump in unemployment insurance claims for last month. That got me thinking about the HVACR career and how versatile it really is. What people don’t realize is that when everything else is slow and people or companies start tightening their budgets, the one thing that is stable is climate control and refrigeration.
In places like Phoenix where the temperatures reach over 100° consistently in the summer, air conditioning is not just a luxury. Office buildings, hospitals, schools, shopping malls, airports and more are designed to include climate control systems. Even in mild or cooler climates climate control is a big factor of everyday life.
This doesn’t of course include refrigeration equipment. Refrigeration comes in many forms and functions such as ice machines, grocery store meat and frozen goods cases, medical equipment, vending machines, restaurant equipment, blood banks, and so on. We have graduates working for Disney on Ice, travelling all over the world freezing ice.
The bottom line is that this equipment must be serviced. Good economy or not, it has to be fixed. The opportunities are limitless and the income levels are expected to increase “faster than average” according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Yet, there just aren’t enough service technicians in the field to meet the demand. We are beginning to see many technicians retire, leaving even more of a shortage.
Basic economics teaches us that where there is a shortage income potential increases. We have seen this first hand. The Career Development Department at The Refrigeration School, Inc. (RSI) deals with this on a daily basis. The need is great among companies and they are willing to pay well to get service technicians.
So, all of this is to say that if you are trying to figure out what to do in life and you like to work with your hands this could be an opportunity you don’t want to miss out on. You can research it more at www.refrigerationschool.com .
